Mini Meadow
Once the retaining wall project was complete, the space in front of it was previously just a lot of overgrown Japanese Spirea, which I categorize as invasive given the hundreds I’ve pulled here, and vinca. Plus some charming landscape plastic. Those plants were removed and the area was simply raked and then started with seeds to form a mini meadow scape in part of the backyard. Partridge Pea is being used as cover crop while a variety of straight species milkweeds, bee balm, asters, lobelias and more grow.

Before- this space was just a lot of Japanese Spirea (which I would categorize as invasive given its behavior here) and some pointless landscape plastics. Several hundred of these plants have been pulled out of the yard here.
After the walls were rebuilt, I removed the spireas and plastics and replanted this area as a mini meadow from seed. Here is is in its 2nd year. I add new seeds for native CT species each year in the fall.
2nd year mini meadow project
Partridge Pea is being used as a cover crop in this meadow space. One of my favorites.
Spring- the common milkweed has appeared but the partridge pea is still low to the ground.
This year the Asclepias Tuberosa and Incarnata began blooming in the space along with Monarda Fistulosa and various asters this fall. Partridge Pea is the cover crop.
Year 2 of the full meadow scape progressing.
